After 20+ years working inside businesses across Canada, the UK, and the US, I have seen what happens when the people side of a business is treated as an afterthought. I have also seen the 'messy middle' where founders get buried in paperwork and lose the ability to lead with kindness.

I have thought about that moment many times since. Because it revealed something important about what HR had become in so many organisations. A function designed to protect the business from its people. A department associated with bad news, policy enforcement, and uncomfortable conversations nobody wanted to have.
That is not the HR I practise.
I believe kindness is not a liability in this work. It is the strategy. Kindness paired with clarity, preparation, and accountability is what builds businesses that last. It is what makes people want to stay. It is what turns a growing team into a genuine culture.
ElleTree exists because that belief deserved a home.
Elle comes from Michelle. Tree comes from what I believe.

One of the defining moments of my early career was working with The Body Shop and being inspired by Anita Roddick. Her belief that business could be a force for good, that profit and humanity were not opposites, shaped how I have approached this work ever since.
I think carefully, I show up consistently, and I work as a genuine partner to the founders I work with.
